Understanding Your USCIS Receipt Number
- USCIS receipt numbers are 13 characters: 3 letters + 10 digits
- The 3-letter prefix identifies the service center (IOE, MSC, SRC, WAC, EAC, LIN)
- IOE numbers indicate electronic/online filings
- Find your receipt number on Form I-797 Notice of Action or email confirmations
Your United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) receipt number is the key to tracking your immigration case. It's assigned when USCIS accepts your application and appears on every notice and correspondence about your case. Understanding what it means can help you navigate the process more confidently.
Receipt Number Format
Every USCIS receipt number follows the same format: 3 letters + 10 digits, for a total of 13 characters. For example: IOE0912345678. You can use this number to check your case status online.
The Three-Letter Prefix
The first three letters indicate the service center or filing system that received your application. According to USCIS:
| Prefix | Service Center | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| IOE | USCIS Electronic Immigration System | Online filings — increasingly common |
| MSC | National Benefits Center | Formerly Missouri Service Center |
| SRC | Texas Service Center | Handles many employment-based cases |
| WAC | California Service Center | Handles many H-1B petitions |
| EAC | Vermont Service Center | Handles various petition types |
| LIN | Nebraska Service Center | Handles many employment-based cases |
| NBC | National Benefits Center | Alternate code for NBC |
The Ten Digits
The remaining 10 digits encode the fiscal year and a sequential case number. The first two digits typically represent the fiscal year (e.g., "24" for fiscal year 2024), and the remaining eight digits are a unique sequence number.
IOE Numbers: The New Standard
If your receipt number starts with IOE, your case was filed electronically through the USCIS online system. IOE numbers have become increasingly common as USCIS moves toward digital processing. These cases are often handled through a centralized system rather than a specific regional service center.
Where to Find Your Receipt Number
- Form I-797 Notice of Action — the receipt notice mailed after USCIS accepts your filing
- Email confirmation — if you filed online, USCIS sends an email with your receipt number
- Text notifications — if you signed up for USCIS text alerts
- myUSCIS account — visible in your online account dashboard
- Your attorney — your immigration lawyer should have records of all receipt numbers
Common Issues with Receipt Numbers
Haven't received your receipt number yet?
After filing, it can take 2-4 weeks to receive your receipt notice. If you filed online, the confirmation is usually faster (within days). If it's been more than 30 days since you filed by mail and you haven't received a receipt notice, contact USCIS.
Receipt number not found in the system?
If your receipt number returns an error when checking status, it may not yet be entered in the system. Wait a few days and try again. Also double-check for typos — every character matters.
Multiple receipt numbers?
If you filed multiple forms (common with Adjustment of Status packages that include I-485, I-765, and I-131), you'll receive a separate receipt number for each form. Track all of them individually, as each case progresses independently. See our guide to tracking family cases for tips.
